SURGERY
can be a frighten-
ing thought and a situation most
would rather avoid. It’s important,
however, that you know the services
your community general surgeons
are able to provide—just in case.
General surgeon Michael Tozzi,
DO, is the newest addition to Halifax
Surgical Associates (HSA), coming
from his previous private practice in
South Hill. Dr. Tozzi brings with him
numerous years of surgical experi-
ence and is well-
acquainted with
providing health-
care in a rural com-
munity setting and
providing outstand-
ing care right here
in the community.
“I have many
patients that come to me and say, ‘I
didn’t know you were able to do this’
when explaining the services I am
able to provide,” says Dr. Tozzi. “I
want my patients to know they don’t
necessarily have to travel far for
general surgery services—they can
stay close to home to receive surgi-
cal care.”
Services at HSA
General surgeons are trained to
diagnose and manage a wide range
Since opening in September 2013, Halifax Surgical Associates (HSA) has been busy provid-
ing high-quality surgical services to residents of South Boston and surrounding commu-
nities. Lovetta Pugh, MD, and Edward Purvis II, MD, were the first physicians to provide
surgical services at HSA, and both physicians brought with them a longstanding relation-
ship with their patients and the community.
Dr. Pugh has been providing surgical care in Halifax County since 2005, and Dr. Purvis
has been providing surgical care in Halifax County since 1996. Michael Tozzi, DO, joined
the practice in January 2014, and MichelleWilkins, MD, will be joining the practice July 1.
HSA is located in the Fuller-Roberts Clinic. To make an appointment with one of

because patients live in a rural set-
ting doesn’t mean they should have
to travel far to receive quality care,
especially surrounding a surgical
procedure. Even if a patient comes to
us for a surgical procedure at Halifax
Regional Hospital, it’s a benefit to
them if they don’t have to drive so
far for follow-up appointments. For
many people, this arrangement will
offer preoperative evaluation or post-
operative follow-up closer to home.”
