LIKE
a complicated machine, the
body is made up of many moving
parts—parts that can get damaged or
just wear out over time.
But unlike a piece of equipment,
when a hip, knee, shoulder or other
joint starts to fail, we feel it, sometimes
intensely. Knee and hip joints are the
ones most often replaced. But surgeons
can also install artificial shoulder, fin-
ger, ankle and elbow joints.
What is an orthopedic surgeon?
Orthopedic surgeons special-
ize in diseases and injuries that
affect the parts of your body that
help you move. These include your
bones, joints, muscles, tendons and
ligaments. Because they are highly
trained surgeons, you may think
surgery is all they do, but orthopedic
surgeons regularly manage patients’
problems with medicine and by
recommending physical therapy and
other treatments. When surgery is
necessary, they perform it—but only
when it’s necessary.
