Hospital’s Health Nite Out–
Cooking With Kids on Tuesday,
April 12, 6 p.m., in the Leggett
Auditorium.
“Getting your kids into the
kitchen is a great way to spend time
with them,” says Lisa Caudle, clinical
nutrition manager at Halifax Re-
gional Hospital. “And usually, if they
have made it, they will eat it.”
Healthy habits
For busy parents, letting kids help
cook is an excellent way to spend
quality time together while building
healthy eating habits and reinforcing
lessons learned in school. Cook-
ing helps children with reading and
math—and even chemistry—skills
and also teaches them to organize
their work logically. And cooking
together helps kids learn about co-
operation and teamwork.
“And it’s fun too,” Caudle says.
Involving children in preparing
meals is a great way to encour-
age them to explore healthy foods
through hands-on activities. It is
also an exciting way to introduce
them to our vast cultural heritage.
Cooking together also teaches some
very important kitchen safety skills
and helps children develop curios-
ity and a willingness to experience
diferent foods.
Create memories
According to Caudle,
children can be surpris-
ingly dedicated to shared time in
the kitchen and fnd a great deal of
pleasure watching an adult, as well as
their brothers and sisters, taste their
creations.
Children can be involved in the
preparation of just about anything:
healthy and tasty snacks, appetiz-
ers, soups, salads, main courses
and desserts. All a parent needs is
a willingness to teach, some kid-
friendly recipes and the desire to
spend time together creating some-
thing delicious and nutritious. Te
memories you create are a bonus!
