WELLNESS
When
the United States De-
partment of Agriculture (USDA)
released its very first food guide
in 1916, it focused on protective
food and offered guidance based
on food groups and the household
measures of the era.
Over the years, the guides have
been modifed to more efectively
meet the needs of the American
public. Some may remember the
1984 Food Wheel focusing on the
fve food groups. Tat guide formed
the basis for the 1992 Food Guide
Pyramid. Te pyramid
was modifed in 2005 to
include a simpler illus-
tration and the concept
of physical activity as
an important part of
healthy living.
Now, in harmony
with the updated
Dietary Guidelines for
Americans, the USDA
has introduced the
simple and efective
MyPlate.
“Te MyPlate illus-
tration is the easiest one
to understand yet,” says
Lisa Caudle, clinical
nutrition manager at Halifax Re-
gional Hospital. “It’s a place setting
that displays the fve food groups
and is clear about how much of each
your plate should contain.”
According to Caudle, current
dietary guidelines ofer some sound
suggestions for healthy eating, such
as to:
w
w
enjoy your food, but eat less
w
w
make half your plate fruits and
veggies
w
w
make at least half of your grains
whole grains
w
w
limit your salt intake
w
w
drink water instead of sugary
drinks.
Caudle suggests a visit to
www.choosemyplate.gov for
families and individuals who want
to learn more about developing
sensible dietary habits. Te website
features a lot of practical informa-
tion and hints to help people make
healthy choices.
A place where your bladder matters

dency at Michigan State University
College of Osteopathic Medicine–
Detroit Medical
Center Campus.
“I look forward to
working in conjunc-
tion with Dr. Fergu-
son at Halifax Urology Associates,”
Dr. Hughart says. “Working to-
gether, we hope to provide a greatly
needed service to the community
and surrounding areas.”
What is urology?
According to the American
Urological Association, urology is
a surgical specialty that deals with
diseases of the male and female uri-
nary tract and the male reproductive
organs.
Many urologic conditions and
diseases are successfully managed
using minimally in-
vasive or outpatient
treatments. Pre-
ventive screenings
play a major role in
improving the outcomes of common
conditions.
While urology is ofen considered
to focus on men’s health, it also deals
with women’s health. Many women
are afected by urologic diseases such
as kidney cancer, bladder cancer,
interstitial cystitis and various forms
of incontinence.
Compassionate care
Dealing with urological issues can
be embarrassing, but HUA will pro-

care needed to restore a happy and
healthy lifestyle.
HUA will serve patients who
need general adult and pediatric
urology services, such as scope
and laser surgery for stone disease
and endoscopic surgery for benign
prostatic hypertrophy and erectile
dysfunction.
“Halifax Regional Hospital is truly
a great asset to Halifax County, and
I hope to make it even stronger,” Dr.
Hughart says.
