If you’re struggling to pay for prescription
medications, we can help.
MedAssist of Halifax, Halifax Regional
Health System’s medication assistance
program, is designed to provide prescrip-
tion medications at no cost to patients
without prescription coverage whose
income is at or below 200 percent of the
federal poverty level. You may be referred
to the program by your physician, or you
may self-refer.
If you’re interested, set up an appoint-
ment with Lita Truitt, the MedAssist of
Halifax caseworker, who will help you
determine eligibility, complete the registra-
tion forms and follow up with your doctor.
MedAssist of Halifax is located at
Halifax Primary Care, 101 Aubrey’s Loop,
in the Houghton Industrial Park in South

honored with the You “Rx”ceptional
Award by the Virginia Health Care
Foundation, presented at the foun-
dation’s 2010 Heroes in Health Care
celebration at the Library of Virginia
in Richmond. Te annual event
recognizes organizations and people
who have made
extraordinary eforts
to help Virginia’s
uninsured receive the
care they need.
Truitt has served
with MedAssist of
Halifax since the program began in
2008 with grant funding from the
Virginia Health Care Foundation,
the Chastain Fund and the Halifax
Regional Development Foundation.

evident from the beginning, as she
and her team worked to educate the
community. Tey circulated letters
and brochures and made presenta-
tions to local medical practices,
churches, civic organizations and
community groups.
Her eforts also included monthly
visits to help patients in outlying areas.
As a result, the pro-
gram grew substan-
tially, allowing Truitt
to recruit another
volunteer, who now is
employed part-time.
Since the program
began, Med­Assist of Halifax has
helped more than 1,000 uninsured
Halifax, Mecklenburg and Charlotte
County residents who have chronic
diseases obtain more than $4 mil-
lion in free prescription medicines.
