Regular
exercise is one of
the best things you can do for your
health. It helps protect you from
some of the most common causes
of death in the United States, and it
helps you feel and look your best.
So why do so many people avoid it?
“Some people just don’t know
how to get started,” says Grant
Merrill, physical therapist at Hali-
fax Regional Health System’s Cox
Rehabilitation Center. “So much has
been written about the importance
of exercise, and each expert has his
own favorite kind. Some people just
feel overwhelmed and have no clue
as to where to begin.”
If this describes you, get help on
Tursday, September 15, 6:30 p.m.
in the Leggett Auditorium at Hali-
fax Regional Hospital (HRH). You
are invited to join Merrill and his
colleagues for an evening of actual
on-your-feet exercise—exercise that
you can do in your own home, with
no gym or special equipment needed.
According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,
exercise can reduce your risk for
health problems such as heart disease,
stroke, diabetes, colon cancer, high
blood pressure, obesity and osteopo-
rosis. Exercise can reduce some of the
efects of aging, relieve symptoms
of anxiety and depression, increase
your energy, ease your arthritis pain,
and help you sleep better.
